Crossing the finish line looking like a figure competitor

By john on Monday, November 2nd, 2009 in The Outdoor Journey

Rachel Cosgrove has a great blog post about training for an Ironman or Half-Ironman and still having a great-looking physique at the end of the race. It’s a goal she’s been challenged to meet for the past few years when she competed in powerlifting (she set a national record) and the world championships in triathlon. […]

Training Diaries: Calling all volunteers

By john on Monday, October 19th, 2009 in The Outdoor Journey

I need your help…I’m launching a new series in January spring in which I follow a group of competitive amateur runners, cyclists, triathletes, mountain bikers, adventure racers and climbers through their preparations for their “A” races in 2010. My goal is to provide a realistic view of how people fit training and racing around family, jobs, school, etc.

Great advice from boxing coach and trainer, Ross Enamait: “I’m amazed at what many consider to be such a complex topic (ex. childhood obesity) is actually so easy to correct. The first step is for parents to begin leading from the front. Is that really too much to ask? I can’t think […]

5-1/2 Questions with David “Chef” Wallach: Pissing in your gas tank

By john on Monday, October 5th, 2009 in The Outdoor Journey

David, “Chef” Wallach represents a fascinating balance between food and fitness. At some point in their lives, athletes can get a bit anal when it comes to food. Who among us hasn’t gone off the deep end with some new nutritional strategy in attempt to improve our performance? Wallach, however, came to the same point as a foodie first, athlete second. Before he ever became serious about what goes on in a squat rack, he was devoted to what goes on in front of a hot stove.

Tabata or not to Tabata

By john on Tuesday, August 18th, 2009 in The Outdoor Journey

My favorite exercise physiologist Lyle McDonald has done it again. This time, he tackles the Tabata Protocol (you know, that 20-second sprint followed by 10 seconds of rest interval thing) and how it’s been mis-used in the world of sports…particularly endurance training. I admit to being a fan of the protocol because, if done correctly, […]

Athlete’s Garden: Overgrown and heading to dormant period

By john on Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 in The Outdoor Journey

The summer is definitely here in the Mojave Desert. We’ve had temps hit in the low triple digits the past few weeks and a brief run-up to 110+ for a few days has put the garden through its paces. Here’s a brief update of the last days of the warm season garden on what worked (not too much) and what didn’t (quite a bit) before I start prepping for the cool season garden.

Integrity

A great little fable about integrity from Tony Gentilcore’s recent article at T-Nation that I felt needed to be read by parents and coaches:

“Come back and see me in two weeks,” the wise man said.

Athlete’s Garden: Defeating cold weather with soda bottle greenhouses

By john on Sunday, April 5th, 2009 in The Outdoor Journey

Drip. Shmip. I’ve had to forgo working on installing more drip systems to keep the gardens watered in favor of protecting my babies from the brutal spring winds that have been cruising through town. While fun to watch and play in, these high-speed winds break young plant stems and suck their lives dry faster than Paris Hilton does the same to her next boyfriend. The answer? Soda bottle greenhouses.
